For many years, SD cards and microSD cards have been issued every six months in connection with the updating of the Mk2, Mk2.1 and Mk2.2 FishSAFE units. This has continued for some time after the introduction of the Mk3 units. However, now that the Mk3 units have been available for some time, FLTC Services is not in a position to support all versions of the unit indefinitely.
It has therefore been decided that the issue of SD cards and microSD cards for updating the Mk2, Mk2.1 and Mk2.2 units will cease after the version 46 data update in summer 2023. From then on, updates will only be available for the Mk3 units.
The Mk3 FishSAFE unit includes major improvements such as a high resolution touch screen and trackball option. The hazards database is updated automatically when the unit is connected to the internet, without the need for SD cards or microSD cards. The internet connection can be made using a cable or WiFi, including via mobile phones on tether
The new version of the FishSAFE unit has been developed by FLTC Services, the operational arm of FLTC, the charity which promotes the distribution of vital data to fishermen. It is available only to fishermen in the UK fleet.
The feedback from users of the Mk3 FishSAFE units has been very positive and the importance of the units in promoting the safety of fishermen working in the vicinity of oil and gas infrastructure in the UKCS is acknowledged by all.
Andrew Third, SFF industry adviser, said “For over 20 years, the FishSAFE unit has been an essential safety tool for fishermen working in the vicinity of oil and gas infrastructure in the UKCS.
“The enhancements built into the Mk3, including data updates by internet connection and a high resolution touch screen display make it even easier for fishermen to have access to the latest oil and gas related data.”
